Description
I carved this Black Kite from Tupelo Wood, painted it with acrylic paint, and mounted it on a tree stump that I pulled out of my back yard. It has glass eyes and cast pewter feet. The bird is approximately 13” from tip of beak to end of tail. The entire mounted piece is approximately 16 1/2” high with an irregularly shaped base that is approximately 9” x 12”.
The Black Kite belongs to the Accipitridae family, a family of small to large birds with strongly hooked bills and variable morphology based on diet. They feed on a range of prey items from insects to medium-sized mammals, with a number feeding on carrion and a few feeding on fruit. Many other well-known birds, such as hawks, eagles, kites, harriers and Old World vultures are included in this group.
The Black Kite is widely distributed through the temperate and tropical parts of Eurasia and parts of Australasia and Oceania, with the temperate region populations tending to be migratory. Several subspecies are recognized and formerly had their own English names. The European populations are small, but the South Asian population is very large. (Above from Wikipedia)
